Microsoft — Topic keyword analysis redesigns
Viva Insights/Workplace Analytics — topic/keyword analysis redesign; design system expansion, mentoring.
Synopsis
Many of the projects I worked on for Workplace Analytics were extensive and ongoing. For this particular project, which focused on the topic keyword analysis section of the app, I took over a struggling initiative and transformed it into a success. Initially joining as a design lead, I provided direction to a contractor and then took over the redesign efforts as the project parameters changed. This study took place at the same time as expansion of the design system I’d been fleshing out and provided a good space to view this in.
Initial set of designs
Working as the design‑lead/consultant for first implementation — ensured the contractor’s work matched component system constraints, fit PM/Engineering needs, and addressed interaction issues found in research.
Push for integration
Took preliminary designs and updated them for another section (Meeting exclusion keyword selection) in conjunction with PM/Engineering, pushing interaction implementation through.
Learnings
Too many steps left users unsure of progress; users wanted to see all steps in one place without scrolling. Goal shifted toward a tool feel rather than a linear wizard.
Multiple layout iterations and user testing to move to a more dense design
Provided options emphasizing a denser layout, table focus, and clearer placement of keyword selection; iterated based on feedback and sizing.
Final flow and specifics for responsive layout
Consolidated steps into a single screen, reduced superfluous data‑viz, and documented responsive behavior across sections. Template selection aligned with broader application patterns for component reuse.
Outcome
A mild visual redesign integrated into the larger design framework; patterns moved the app toward a cohesive tool experience and were adopted by the team after transition.
